The Coon Rapids Police Reserve unit has been active since November 20, 1962. Police Reserve Officers assist when extra personnel are needed. Reserve officers are community volunteers who represent a range of age and career groups. Reserve officers receive uniforms and special training.

Each year, Reserve Officers donate hundreds of service hours to the community assisting with traffic control, patrol at events and parades, searching for missing people and other assignments.

Minimum requirements to join the reserve unit:

- You must be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen
- Possess a valid MN drivers license with a good driving record
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate
- Be in good physical condition; no disabilities restricting body functions
- Submit to complete criminal history and background check
- Pass an oral examination by a review board
- Complete police reserve academy and training
- Complete a probationary period
- Attend meetings and training sessions throughout the year
