City of Coon Rapids Logo Night to Unite

“Night to Unite” (Formerly known as National Night Out). New name, same great program.

Q: What is Night to Unite?

A: Minnesota’s Night to Unite is an evening to gather with your neighbors and the Coon Rapids Police Department.

Q: When is the time and date of the annual Night to Unite?

A: Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010. Neighborhood gatherings often begin around 5:30 p.m., it is up to the individual group to set a time that works best for their area.

Q: Why did we change the name of this program?

A: Primarily to get out from under the umbrella of the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). NATW is a non-profit organization that manages National Night Out. NATW fell under scrutiny when the public gained knowledge regarding the compensation the executive director was earning. The funds to support this program primarily come from the Department of Justice and membership fees paid by law enforcement agencies throughout the county.

Q: What are the benefits of the name change?
A: We can produce our own materials without having concern for copyright laws. This will allow for a more affordable celebration. Night to Unite is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods celebrate Night to Unite with a variety of events and activities such as: block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and fire departments, parades, flashlight walks, contests and youth programs. Night to Unite has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. The benefits your community will derive from Night to Unite will most certainly extend well beyond the night.
