Home for Generations
Remodeling is Finished!
The City of Coon Rapids kicked off its Home for Generations program early in 2009. This program demonstrates to residents how to remodel older style homes to meet the needs of today’s families all within a modest budget.
"One of our housing goals is to promote reinvestment in our existing neighborhoods," said city manager Matt Fulton. The city will do this by purchasing vacant, bank-owned properties and work with a contractor to determine what work should be completed. Re-using materials and shopping at liquidators and re-use centers will be methods encouraged to residents for their own projects and will help to keep the cost of this project reasonable.
Each of the homes selected in the Home for Generations program will be open to the public for a Pre-Open House before construction begins and an Open House midway through the construction process. Once the construction has been completed, there will be several Open Houses scheduled to showcase the finished home to existing homeowners to demonstrate what they can do to invest in their own homes, and also to new homebuyers attracting them to buy in Coon Rapids.

Completed Homes:
The second Home for Generations home is located at 12924 Crooked Lake Boulevard NW. The home was purchased through a short sale for $109,000 and closed on Thursday, April 22nd, 2010.
The house is a 1979 split-entry home and consists of 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms - with just over 2,000 square feet of finished space. The Pre-Construction Open House was held on May 2nd.
The final project was completed and open houses were held in August and September for the community. In all, there were over 1,500 residents that toured 12924 Crooked Lake Blvd, they saw how an older home could be updated and transformed under a modest budget, and hopefully became motivated to do similar projects in their own houses. The first Home for Generations home was a small Orrin Thompson rambler, so being able to demonstrate to homeowners how they can renovate, update and re-invent their 1970s and 1980s split entry homes will be a great opportunity. Basic plans include creating a master suite on the upper level, removing a wall in the living area to create an open great room and enhancing the entry way to include more space and a main level laundry room.
