The Economic Development Division facilitates economic development and redevelopment in the City. The Economic Development Division responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating redevelopment of blighted properties.
  • Assisting in marketing available commercial and industrial land and providing resources for business development.
  • Assisting with financing for projects that help achieve the City's development goals.

Coon Rapids is proud of its diverse business community, which employs about 23,400 people and provides goods and services to local, regional, national and international markets. The City is home to over 40 manufacturing firms, including manufacturers of medical instruments, aircraft parts, and electrical equipment. The City also includes a large amount of office space and over 2 million square feet of retail space in the Riverdale business district near US 10 and Main Street. Does my business need a City license or permit?

The City of Coon Rapids does not require a license for most types of businesses.  However, certain businesses, including those selling alcohol, tobacco, fireworks, Christmas trees, or secondhand goods, must have a City license.  Massage therapy businesses, bowling alleys, adult-oriented businesses, and currency exchange businesses also require a license.  Please contact the City Clerk’s office for application information.

Also, different types of businesses are allowed in different zoning districts. You can check the Zoning Map to find out the zoning of a particular property and the Land Development Regulations (navigate to city code chapter 11) to find out which uses are allowed. Can I operate a business from my home in Coon Rapids?

Home-based businesses are an important part of the City’s economy.  Certain types of home occupations are permitted in the City of Coon Rapids without any City approvals.  These generally include types of businesses that do not bring customers to the residence or involve internal or external modifications to that are not customarily found in residences.  Other types of home occupations require a conditional use permit, which is granted by the City’s Planning Commission.  These types of home occupations may involve internal alterations to the residence or a customer or outside employee arriving at the residence.  Certain types of home occupations are prohibited, including auto repair, engine repair, firearm sales, and welding.  For additional information, please refer to City Code Sections 11-603 and 11-604 or contact the Planning Division at (763)767-6430.

The City of Coon Rapids offers financial assistance for development projects meeting certain City goals. Visit the Financial Resources page for more information.  The Central Minnesota Development Company is a local provider of Small Business Administration loans.  The University of St. Thomas Small Business Development Center offers limited free consulting, where clients can receive assistance with strategic business plans, market research, financial planning and analysis, loan packaging and cash flow management.  The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development’s Business Services Division can help companies expand, find and train employees, promote international trade, and finance business expansions.
