City Launches Business Retention and Expansion Program

The City of Coon Rapids completed a Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) Program, which is designed to identify issues and develop a strategic plan for economic development in the City. The program is in partnership with the University of Minnesota Extension and is sponsored by the City of Coon Rapids, Connexus Energy, Xcel Energy, CenterPoint Energy, Central Bank, Klein Bank, and Kraus-Anderson Construction. Under the BR&E, local volunteers visit businesses and gather information about specific opportunity areas, challenges, and issues facing Coon Rapids’ business community. These visits were completed in October and November of 2012. The information gathered from the visits was compiled and analyzed by the U of M Extension, which includes input from economic development practitioners, university faculty, and local community leaders. A task force of local leaders met in February 2013 to identify priority projects that could be implemented to address issues that arose in the survey.
