(August 1, 2012) - Anoka County will be re-opening Main Street, County Road 14 on Thursday, August 2. The roadway has been closed in sections since July 2011. On Wednesday, August 1, city and county officials participated in a grand opening celebration on the grounds of Roosevelt Middle School. Several local elected officials spoke about the project, including Mayor Tim Howe. Howe said the project is an example of two cities (Coon Rapids and Blaine) working with the county to get things done. Howe also said, “This is a main East/West route that is very important to the area.
Improvements to the roadway include: the upgrade of the roadway from two to four lanes, the addition of a raised median with curb and gutter, a pedestrian trail which extends for the full length of the project, the construction of an overpass of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway near Avocet street and the replacement of five existing traffic signals with new signals and appropriate turn lanes.
Although the roadway will be open, some work will continue to finish up the project. Lanes will be closed at times for workers to finish off the median. Construction of the trail that will run the length of the project on the south side will also take place.
The project was the first design-build project handled by Anoka County, which saves both time and money according to county officials.
